Neurostimulation- or spinal cord stimulation -is a method of pain control frequently used to treat back pain, and pain in the arms and legs. Similar in function and appearance to cardiac pacemakers, neurostimulators deliver mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, interrupting or masking the pain signals’ transmission to the brain. Neurostimulation can be a very effective method of treating chronic pain, helping to restore a patient’s quality of life. The therapy is customized to meet the needs for each individual patient. Neurostimulation can provide an alternative to long-term drug therapy for the relief of chronic conditions. Unlike pharmaceutical treatments, neurostimulation therapies are targeted to the source of the problem, rather than delivered throughout the body. This method of treating pain is unique in that it provides patients with a period where they are able to try the therapy and see if it is an effective solution for their chronic pain before going forward with the permanent implant.
